Finding freedom

in and through the body

What is the Slow Awakenings

I decided on this name, ‘The Slow Awakenings,’ because as I began the very body based practice of yoga and then more so somatic movement, that was my experience. I was slowly awakening to myself. It felt as though my physical sensations were more on line to receive the world both inside and outside of me. From here I did a deep dive into the trainings, not because I wanted to teach but because this was where it was possible to sink more deeply in. This journey has moved from the body to include the heart and the mind and has changed how I live my life. So what is it that I do?

I do my best to create an environment where it is easy to move into our bodies. To find more of ourselves. It is like gathering more puzzle pieces to work towards building a complete picture of ourselves. To feel how we are connected on the inside, how when one part moves, something always follows. And how to find the pleasure in this.

Why do I do this?

From the physical point of view I do this so the body can move more easily, as if the joints have been oiled and move more freely. This can reduce pain and stiffness but also can feel fluid and fabulous. It can allow more freedom, more reach, more expansion.

From a nervous system point of view. Well our nervous systems are often running on a low level but constant stress and we know that coming into the body is a key to coming out of the mind and into the breath. So these classes are an hour or more spent in the body which is a nervous system reset and it is building the habit of spending more time in the body, learning ways that you can land in your body more easily whether you are sitting at a desk or moving faster than you would like through your day. This is a gift for any nervous system.

From an emotional/spiritual point of view, this is harder to describe and for everyone will be so different. What people report after classes is that they have a clearer or stronger sense of themselves, that they feel more grounded, more present, more soft and quiet in the mind. My experience is that it makes it easier for me to differentiate what is happening on the inside and therefore it is more possible for me to sense what it is that I need in any given moment. And importantly for me, I know myself better, still with plenty more to know but I know myself better. And this gives me more freedom and more clarity around being who I am in the world.

The human body is not an instrument to be used, but a realm of one’s being to be experienced, explored, enriched and, thereby, educated.
